What is crest?
Consultancy and Research Technologies (CREST) provides partners with the needed intellectual capital to level up their performance and achieve their desired outcomes. The overarching consultancy and research philosophy of CREST is anchored on Dr. Eduardo A. Morató Jr.’s comprehensive external and internal environment assessment approaches. Taken together, these two approaches logically lead to the organization’s strategic plan. Applied to different client needs, the comprehensive strategic philosophy can be customized and broken down for commercial and development concerns.
CREST is also spearheading Bayan Academy’s initiative in becoming Southeast Asia’s regional learning hub for social entrepreneurship education and research. The social entrepreneurship intellectual capital built by CREST through its services is intended to inform the design of the other operating units of Bayan Academy in delivering more effective and responsive services for social entrepreneurs and social enterprise managers.

The macro environment is composed of various political, economic, social, technological, and environmental factors. An analysis and synthesis of these factors could provide insights with regard to historical, current, and future trends. These trends could be game changers to research users.
These studies are part of the entrepreneurial process of opportunity seeking, screening, and seizing. The outputs of the studies are used to create innovations for organizations, whether development or commercial, so they can better achieve their organizational objectives.
Is there an actual and potential market that could sustain the opportunity? Is there a viable enterprise delivery system that can meet the market’s quality, delivery, and price specifications? How should the organization’s people competencies and capabilities be developed such that the designed enterprise delivery system be implemented? Will the opportunity achieve its desired bottom lines?
These major questions will be answered through these feasibility studies. Depending on the needs of the client organization, research methodologies can be customized such that the studies can specifically deliver the insights that the research user is looking for.
Value is created and destroyed through the life cycle of products and services from the inputs used until these are delivered to the end consumers. The objective of value chain studies is to know the critical factors for value creation and destruction at each level of the value chain. This can be used by development organizations to better customize their interventions for their beneficiaries. For commercial organizations, this can be used to gain competitive advantage.
The organizational diagnosis is a breakdown of an organization’s performance historically, with regard to targets set, and based on available industry benchmarks. The documented performance parameters are then analyzed and synthesized with regard to different variables – people competencies and capabilities, utilizations of resources, implementation of management processes and functions (marketing, operations, HR, and finance), teams and individuals, available physical assets, networks and alliances, leadership, and the strategic fit of the organization’s vision – strategies – organization – people.
After this thorough diagnosis, the organization’s strengths and weaknesses are listed. Depending on the organization’s chosen direction moving forward, the identified strengths and weaknesses can be used as bases for the consequent recommendations on organizational design and development.
The objective of strategic planning is to chart the major directions of an organization for a set period. To prevent the strategic planning sessions from becoming mere opinion generating activities, prior researches on the organization’s external and internal environments are recommended.
The external environment assessment is the study of the macro environment, industry, and market of the organization. This would yield insights with regard to the organization’s opportunities and threats. On the other hand, the internal assessment is an organizational diagnosis. This would yield the organizational strengths and weaknesses.
The evidence –based strategic planning approach of Bayan Academy is further anchored on Dr. Eduardo A. Morato, Jr.’s strategic planning framework. This framework thoroughly lays out the organizational vision – mission – objectives - key result areas - performance indicators – strategies – programs – activities – tasks – resources (VMOKRAPISPATRES).
Every area has its own resources, whether these be in the form of people or natural resources. Area development and sustainability planning initiatives aim to maximize the sustainable utilization of an area for the benefit of its stakeholders.
Depending on the need of the client, various research methodologies can be implemented. The research outputs would serve as inputs to the planning proper which will also be anchored on Bayan Academy’s and Dr. Eduardo A. Morato, Jr.’s VMOKRAPISPATRES framework for strategic planning.
Effective development interventions take into consideration where the beneficiaries are coming from. This ought to be one of the major considerations in the design of development interventions. Bayan Academy’s beneficiary profiling methodologies aim to fully understand the needs, motivations, and aspirations of beneficiaries. The resulting qualitative and quantitative research data can be used as evidence-based performance indicators which can specifically guide the development intervenors as they manage their programs and projects.
Has the livelihood initiative resulted into an increased and more regular net take home pay? Has the health initiative resulted into a better health ecosystem? Has the intervention for teachers resulted into better academic performance by the students?
Have the targeted program or project outcomes been achieved? This is the primary question that an impact assessment aims to answer. Through Bayan Academy’s impact assessments, the client organization can learn from its experiences after delivering a certain program or project. Not only will it provide the actual outcomes delivered, the assessment will also give insights on what best practices can be continued and what weaknesses in implementation can be improved moving forward.
